Despite pumping out a new character trailer what feels like every other day, King of Fighters XV will not hit its targeted 2021 release window, developer SNK has confirmed. The PlayStation 4 brawler didn't actually have a confirmed date, but having been announced all the way back in 2019, it didn't necessarily look like a hefty delay was on the cards.
King of Fighters XV will now launch in the first quarter of 2022, according to producer Yasuyuki Oda. In an official statement, Oda writes: "The development timeline we set out to reach in the beginning has been affected by the ever-still rising cases of COVID-19 within Japan. We have made the ultimate decision in the end that the product’s quality must come first, and so with that decision comes an altered release window."
"We sincerely ask for your kind patience and understanding as our development teams continue to work hard on KOF XV as we draw closer to its release," the post concludes.
A shame, but totally understandable. Hopefully King of Fighters XV delivers a knockout blow when it does eventually release next year. At least in the meantime, we've got the freshly launched Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown and the upcoming Guilty Gear Strive to satisfy our combo-hungry brains.

Kinda mad to think we’ll be getting PS4 games still in 2022. Not quite Fire Emblem Thracia 776 level (released on SNES in 2000!!!) but pretty crazy to be 8 years after the PS4’s launch.
Not surprised, and I’m cool with the delay. SNK can spend all the time they need on this game. Just a game to look forward to in 2022.
@nessisonett Considering how wildly successful the PS4 was I doubt big third party support is abandoning the platform for a good few years, similar to how the 3DS got an additional two and a half years of notable third party support even after the Switch came out, or how the PS2 became a safe haven for sports sims all the way until 2013
Much sadness. Can't be helped.
is delaying games a trend ?
SNK can take their time with this.
Plenty of fighting games to mess around with until then.
Cant wait for Guilty Gear ❤
Eh, cool - we have our plates full with VF and GG strive. I hope they deliver a good game Also I have a feeling the last SFV character will be a KOF collaboration...
Why pump out the weekly trailers then? Looking forward to this either way so as long as the quality is top notch, I don't mind.
Well then, something to look forward to in 2022. It seems like SNK is putting a lot if effort into improving the look of 14, and it will be great to have Shermie back in the series.
Still, as much as I’m anticipating 15, my two favorite KOFs are 12 & 13. They stand as the epitome of hand drawn 2D fighter graphics. Revisiting them was a highlight of my brief dalliance with PS now, and they are both worthy of a rerelease.
Plenty of time to make the character's heads bigger than their hands. (That screenshot looks like Wreck It Ralph with Terry Bogard's head photoshopped in!)
